Assignment 3

I have really enjoyed our third assignment, even though it has taken quite a long time to do the research. I am continuing to investigate textiles and the environment. I have tried to find information to do with sustainable textiles and materials as well as looking at the nature of consumers when it comes to buying and throwing clothes away.

Fletcher, Kate, 2008, Sustainable fashion & textiles, London, Earthscan

This book looks at materials in sustainable fashion, challenges existing ideas about sustainable textiles and goes into depth about the materials we currently use, and the alternatives. It covers the long term environmental impact of fashion and looks at the ‘lifecycle’: ‘material cultivation/extraction, production, use and disposal’.

Morgan, Louise R; Birtwistle, Grete, 2009, ‘An investigation of young consumers’ disposal habits’, International Journal of Consumer Studies, vol. 33, no. 2 pp. 190-198

This article seems to be extremely relevant to what I am looking at. It covers the idea of the ‘throw away society’ that we live in and looks at how fashion garments are disposed. I am very interested in the recycling and reuse theme. The article also looks at people’s lack of understanding when it comes to how these bad habits are effecting our environment.

Murphy, Joseph; Cohen, Maurie J, 2001, Exploring Sustainable Consumption: Environmental Policy and the Social Sciences, Pergamon

To relate what I am looking at to the world in general, I felt I would need a more general view on consumption and our environment. This book covers many different environmental issues, mainly consumerism, and looks into ‘the pursuit for sustainable lifestyles’. It brings together a group of internationally recognised authors who tackle environmental policy and ways to take action.

Scaturro, Sarah, 2008, Eco-Tech Fashion: Rationalizing Technology in sustainable fashion, Fashion theory: the Journal of dress, body & culture, pp469-488

I thought this article would be very good for finding out the technical side of being environmentally friendly with our fashion! This journal says there are two main areas involved in ‘Eco-tech fashion’: ‘the physical manifestation of sustainable textiles’ and ‘the digital domain’.

Smith, Beth, 2006, ‘The High Road’, Selvedge magazine, 34-35, no 14.

This was a feature about Deborah Milner, who is an inspiration woman who owns the company Aveda (an eco-friendly cosmetics company). She has developed an environmentally friendly fashion collection called ‘Ecoture’ which is full of recycled dresses and fair trade hand woven silk pieces.

Wang, Youjiang, 2006, ‘Recycling in textiles’, Woodhead Publishing, USA

This book looks at the practicality of recycling: are the recycled products cost effective? Is there a market? Enough waste to be recycled? After the recycling process, are we actually doing any good considering the emissions etc. This book challenges the idea of recycling, and I think it gives a bit of balance to my research.
